I love the 7th generation. There’s just something simple and strong looking about them.
They also look pretty badass when lifted.

Yes!!! I love these too, my plan some day is to fly out west and buy one with a good body, bring it home and swap a fuel injected motor into it. My dad had one when I was a kid, it had a souped up 454...so it got 8 mpg downhill with the wind at it’s back. We called it “the bus” since it was yellow

YES. I love these, they’re on my list. I need one with a big block, manual transmission, the barn doors, and a good seventies paint scheme.

I had one of these for a first car. Loved it. Onyx Black with the side accent in Quicksilver, almost exactly like that 3rd pic.

I, on the other hand, am nursing a quite undeserved grudge toward one in specific today. The one that barfed its power steering pump and I was working on until after 10 last night. WHY DOES THE 6.2 USE A SPECIAL POWER STEERING PULLEY ARGARBLE

If that got 8mpg I’d say it’s pretty darn good. I’m getting about 8mpg(on a good day) with of my 2wd Chevy C20 with a stock 350.

Growing up my dad had a 87 and a 98 suburban.. Good memories learned to drive in the 87.
Same two tone as this

Twas my first car. 88 with a conversion interior and graphics by TrailMaster. Terrible wood for days and a sweet TV/VCR. Sold it to a guy who shipped them down to Mexico...apparently they're way more expensive down there.

A friend’s. My mom’s DD for years and years was *another* 6.2, a diesel, but it’s down for an engine rebuild at the moment. This one is a ratty-looking blue-pinstripes-on-white-and-rust 6.2 2wd ‘88 model that used to belong to a summer camp and now is the vehicle of choice of a young friend who’s a firefighter. Power steering pump was so bad you could push on the pulley and make it clank, and since the diesels use the PS pump for the power brakes as well, it’s really serious.
I got the pump off after much irritation including a fight with the high pressure line boss in the back (it tried to unscrew) and then had to use a puller a little bit at a time for about half an hour to remove the pulley. Somewhere in the process, the pulley got bent. Discontinued part, unique to the 6.2 diesel, no aftermarket replacement. FAAAAHHHHK.
So, I have built a jig to straighten the bastard and use feelers to make sure it is. I will then have to use a straightedge and mount the pump in place without the pulley on to mark the pulley center and make sure any change of offset in the pulley is accounted for. FAAAAAAAAHHHHK pt. 2.

YES! They don’t build em like that anymore. So easy to work on, simple, yet built to last. The build quality has gone downhill with each generation since.

May I also say that 7th gen 1500 4WD front brakes fill me with hate, and that they’re a giant pain in the ass to pick up on a two-post lift?

I had this weird fantasy in college about getting one of these, ripping out the seats and putting in mattresses, and going on an epic road trip.

I would like to add - I had 2003 suburban. Main brakes were fine... but the god damn e-brakes.... Wow What fucking engineer said the brakes shall fail when you’re going over 5 mph...

What you’re saying is that leaving the e-brake on and going in motion cause e-brake go boom? Good to know. Literally within the past week my dad was working on an ‘03 for other issues, and the e-brake was seemingly worn out beyond the point of adjustment.

It’s just a guess, I know it got around 5mpg when he’d tow our 30ft camper

The 7th generation Suburbans are the best looking Suburbans. Mechanically my favorite is the 9th generation (GMT-800). I love them all though, and it’s a shame that they’re gotten so expensive, that I’ll never be ale to buy a new Suburban.
